Trauma Therapy for High-Functioning Coloradans Who Are Tired of Holding It All Together

Trauma doesn’t always look like a crisis — and it doesn’t always happen in a single moment. Many of the people I work with in Colorado are skilled, high-achieving, and functional on the outside — but internally exhausted, anxious, or quietly overwhelmed. Trauma can show up as:

  • Persistent anxiety or nervous tension

  • Patterns of overworking, perfectionism, or people-pleasing

  • Emotional numbness or distress that feels “out of proportion” to the present

  • Old experiences subtly steering current relationships or decisions

Trauma therapy helps your nervous system learn that it no longer has to stay on high alert — so you can experience steadiness, clarity, and a deepening sense of well-being.

A Colorado-Based Practice Shaped by Nature, Quiet, and Intentional Living

I chose to live and practice in the Rocky Mountains because nature offers something many of us are missing — space to slow down, breathe, and reconnect.

Colorado attracts people who value outdoor movement, quiet, and intentional living, yet many still carry anxiety, trauma, or nervous system overwhelm shaped by years of pressure, responsibility, or learned survival patterns.

As a Latina therapist, my work is informed by an understanding of cultural and generational stress — especially the belief that rest must be earned and strength means pushing through. Therapy becomes a place to soften those expectations and build resilience rooted in self-compassion rather than self-criticism.

My approach blends grounded empathy with clear guidance, supporting clients in regulating their nervous systems, reconnecting with their bodies, and creating lives that feel sustainable — not just successful.

In-Person & Virtual Trauma Therapy in Colorado

Solum Life Therapy is located in the historic Graden Mercantile in Downtown Durango, Colorado. In-person sessions are offered here — nestled in the San Juan Mountain Range — and virtual trauma therapy is available to residents throughout Colorado.

I specialize in trauma-informed therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a well-researched method for resolving unprocessed emotional experiences that continue to affect your daily life. EMDR can be especially helpful for people who:

  • Feel “stuck” despite insight and effort

  • Have tried other therapy approaches with limited change

  • Want structured, evidence-based work

  • Are seeking deeper nervous system regulation rather than surface-level coping

Whether in person or online, the goal is the same: meaningful, lasting relief from patterns that no longer serve your well-being.

This approach is particularly effective for people who:

Feel intellectually aware but emotionally reactive

Have tried traditional talk therapy with limited results

Want structured, research-supported trauma treatment

Are seeking meaningful, long-term change rather than surface-level coping

Virtual EMDR allows Colorado residents to access specialized trauma care without geographic limitations or long waitlists.

You also have the option to travel to Durango, CO, for a retreat-style 1, 2, or 3-day EMDR Intensive with Barbara. Immerse yourself in a picturesque mountain town, stay at one of our local downtown boutique hotels just steps away from Barbara’s office, and decompress with sound healing, massage, or time in nature after your session.

Sound Healing — A Complement to Your Therapeutic Journey

In addition to psychotherapy, I offer sound healing as a complementary experience that supports nervous system regulation, emotional grounding, and deep relaxation. Sound healing uses tuning forks, Himalayan bowls, chimes, and intentional frequencies to help you:

  • Release stress and body-held tension

  • Quiet the internal chatter that contributes to anxiety

  • Access nervous system calm outside of talk therapy

  • Support emotional release in a gentle, non-verbal way

Sound healing can stand alone as a wellness session or be woven into your therapeutic work. It is not a replacement for psychotherapy but a supportive pathway to rest, balance, and internal integration.

Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives.

Who I Work With

My style of therapy may be a good fit if you:

  • Are seeking trauma-focused or EMDR therapy in Colorado

  • Want in-person sessions in Durango or virtual sessions across the state

  • Prefer private-pay, intentional therapy over insurance-driven models

  • Are ready to address the root of internal distress with depth and care

  • Benefit from a therapist with a more direct and goal-oriented approach

My style of therapy may not be the right fit if you:

  • Are currently in crisis or need emergency support

  • Are looking for short-term advice rather than transformational work

  • Are seeking therapy for reasons outside of trauma, stress, or nervous system dysregulation (we can discuss referrals)

How EMDR & Trauma Therapy Work

EMDR is a structured therapeutic approach that helps the brain reprocess experiences that remain emotionally charged or unresolved. Rather than just talking about your past, EMDR supports your nervous system in integrating these experiences so they no longer dictate your responses in daily life.

In Colorado, EMDR and trauma therapy are offered in both weekly sessions and EMDR Intensives — deeply focused, extended sessions (including retreat-style options) for people who want concentrated progress in a shorter time frame.

Therapeutic Environment That Supports Your Healing

In-person sessions take place in a private, serene office in Durango, surrounded by nature and intentional space for inward work. This grounded setting can deepen your therapeutic experience and allow for integration beyond the session itself.

Whether you choose to work here in person or virtually, your therapy experience is designed to meet you where you are and help you move toward greater ease, connection, and emotional regulation.

What My Therapy Clients Say

“Barbara is fantastic. She’s very empathetic and understanding, and well-versed in practical knowledge that helps. I’m very glad I found Barbara.” - K.E.

Barbara is an incredible therapist. She makes me feel truly supported & cared for, unlike past therapists that have been cold & aloof. I love her spiritual approach & I feel like finding her was fate. Thanks Barbara, you’re the best!” - E.

“I was new to online counseling, and counseling in general, and Barbara made me feel comfortable sharing my story from day one. Within the first few months I have seen tremendous improvement with my anxiety and in my everyday life. I have been with Barbara talking almost every week for over a year and I am so happy I found someone so understanding and knowledgeable.” -S.M.

“I was new to online counseling and was nervous about finding someone I could connect with. I absolutely love my counselor. In just 3 sessions I feel a difference with using some of her suggestions.” -V.I.

“Barbara helped me to see angles of my life that I could not see myself and was an incredibly soothing presence. I am very thankful for our work together.” - S.M.

“I had one of the most positive transformations of my life during the six months I was in therapy with Barbara. I came to work with her because I was experiencing pervasive anxiety. Through EMDR, listening and compassion, she helped me identify, work through and manage the trauma of my past that was causing me unresolved emotional and physical pain. It is nearly impossible to find a therapist that understands women of color and is LGBTQ-friendly, much less one that is easy-going and highly experienced. Regardless of why you’re seeking a therapist, Barbara is a professional, skilled and kind therapist that will give you the space to heal and transform.” - C.G.
